Living for Your 90-year-old Self
Sometimes, scrolling Instagram pays off.
The other day, a friend posted a meme to the effect of, “I’m not working out for my summer body. I’m working out for my living-independently-in-my-70s body.” I double-tapped and then let that thought percolate for the next few days.
Now, I find myself in one of the most loving, fulfilling, and tender relationships I’ve ever had: With my 90-year-old self.
I’ve been checking in with my 90-year-old self more and asking what she wants to look back on.
Snuggles with the kids.
Laughter.
Romps with the husband.
Financial abundance knowing she put her kids through school, helped them with down payments, and had plenty left over to age in place safely.
Mobility.
Memories of adventures to new places and supporting people she loves through difficult times.
Knowing that she has lived fully, joyfully, and authentically.
She knows there’s plenty of time and much less to worry about.
When I can click into this mindset, things flow, and it’s easier to recognize distractions for what they are – and to give myself grace navigating them as a human.
Time feels more abundant because I have a great filter for what gets my attention. What will matter more to me in 50 years: Perfectly captioned Instagram posts? Or saying yes when my kiddo asks me to play with her?
I also feel liberated by the extended time horizon. For example, I’m a novice herbalist right now. And I have to tell you: 90-year-old-me is absolutely OK with that. Think how much more I’ll know a decade from now. And in thirty years? Fifty? There’s plenty of time.
So, how do you make the shift?
I hope reading this expands your way of thinking and helps you start to embrace your own 90-year-old self.
I also love a roadmap, and know so many of you feel the same way.
