The Moment That Changes Everything
Getting the promotion.
Not getting the promotion.
Having your partner belittle you in front of your kids.
Having your partner get a new job across the country.
Inheriting a windfall.
Dealing with chronic pain.
Having a baby.
Getting laid off.
Living through a global pandemic.
Dealing with long Covid.
These, my dear, are just a handful of catalytic events my clients have experienced.
A catalytic event is The Moment That Changes Everything.
They come in all sorts of packages, and we don’t generally get to choose them.
But we do get to choose how we proceed when they present themselves.
In fact, this challenging time may just be the portal to your truest self.
Take a look at this graphic, outlining the change cycle as laid out by my teacher (and Oprah’s life coach) Martha Beck:
What do you do when life goes “BANG!”?
First, you might curl up under the covers with no idea what to do next.
As you find your footing, you may cut your hair or rearrange your house because it doesn’t feel like you anymore.
You gain more clarity and feel unstoppable, determined to make your dreams a reality.
Then you stumble.
Finally, you find your groove and soar!
Then something happens that leaves you wanting to curl under the covers with no idea what to do next.
That’s the natural order of things, isn’t it?
Don’t worry – you’ve been here before, and you’ll be here again.
Because life is made up of cycles.
Four seasons, a waxing and waning moon, a rising and setting sun.
The same thing happens in our own life – with careers, with relationships, with our own sense of self.
Death and Rebirth > Dreaming and Scheming > The Hero’s Saga > The Promised Land…and back to Death and Rebirth.
Why does this matter?
Knowing where you are in the change cycle allows you to figure out what type of support you need, what challenges to expect, and where you might need a little extra grace.
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be digging deep into the change cycle, how to tell where you are, and what to do about it.
Also, it’s important to note, you can absolutely be in different phases in different areas of your life.
Maybe you’re hitting your stride at work but fumbling in a relationship. Maybe you feel you’re finally stepping into who you were truly meant to be, only to look around and notice your friendships don’t fit like they used to.
Not only is that ok, dear one, it’s to be expected.
Today, I want you to ask yourself:
What’s the last thing that happened that made you feel like everything was starting to change?
For me, it was when I designed a really great program that launched to absolute crickets. Didn’t expect that to be a portal to a fuller version of myself, but lo and behold.
Next time, we’ll focus on Square One – the goo. It’s going to get gnarly, but I’ll be right by your side.
