How to Get out of Your Own Way
Last night, I posted this to my personal Instagram:
When she saw it, my friend Skye* asked, “How do you do mentally with not having the space to work or do your normal things?”
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately, especially as our childcare search keeps coming up empty and our five-year-old has been home all but one day since Nov. 15.
Here’s what I voice memo-ed back to Skye:
“A lot of letting go. A LOT of letting go. And also: reminding myself that it is a limiting belief to think that everything has to be in order for me to make progress on what I really care about.
“I’m allowing it to be more brainstorming time than executing time. And taking a lot of notes. There will be time for executing; for now, I’ll collect ideas, and execute a little bit. Because I’m excited from the brainstorming, and then it just flows.**
"And also: It’s really hard.”
Learning to recognize and dissolve a limiting belief is one of the most powerful ways to change your life. Starting now.
What stories are you telling yourself about why you can’t do / have / be what’s calling to your heart?
"I can’t grow my business until..." "I can’t apply for that speaking gig until..." "I can’t book that photo shoot until..."
I’m going to tell you a secret: If the thought causes you suffering or pain, it’s bullshit.
So – how on earth do you learn to let go of the thought?
Byron Katie developed a powerful set of questions known as The Work:
Is it true?
Can you absolutely know that it’s true?
How do you react when you believe that thought?
Who would you be without the thought?
I promise, if you start asking yourself those questions, things will start to shift.
What thoughts are holding you back? How would it feel to leave those behind as we cross into the new year?
Let’s wiggle those thoughts and invite some freedom. Book your discovery call here.
*Skye is a brilliant collage artist. If we’ve worked together, you may have noticed her “Inner Child” piece on the back wall of my office. You can buy her work here and follow her on Instagram.
**One thing I couldn’t help but bring forth? A Winter Solstice Celebration and Ritual on December 20, the evening before Solstice. You can get all the details – and buy your ticket! – here.
