Are you ready for a Sacred Rumble?

In my early twenties, I worked in a small but revered contemporary art museum. The founder — and my boss — had an amazing gift for recognizing artists, and she had the means to support their art.

In many ways it was a dream job for a recent art history grad. In many other ways, it was highly toxic.

One of the biggest perks was my other boss, a talented artist himself who was serving as interim director. He was a challenging boss, but a phenomenal mentor. He had a knack for lovingly calling me on my bullshit.

A (strategic, training-informed) version of this is what I get to do with clients who are up for and in need of it.

It’s what I now think of as a Sacred Rumble.

  • “Is that really what you want?”

  • “Why do you think you need that?”

  • “Why are you putting up with that?”

  • “What if that weren’t true?”

  • “What if it were possible?”

And then holding steady loving witness while my client begins to step into their deeper truth.

This used to make me uncomfortable! Both sides of it did. I didn't want to seem rude or aggressive, and I didn't always love feeling challenged.

Now I find myself craving it.

When I’m feeling stuck but can’t figure out why, I know I need a Sacred Rumble.

And holy wow, have I seen this unlock possibilities for my clients.

It’s not that I always know the right answer. It’s that I have a gift for knowing when someone isn’t admitting the radical truth to themselves.

“I hate my job, but I could never quit.”

→ She quit 6 months later and now has the most radiant glow when we talk.

“My kids will hate me if I leave their father. They deserve parents who are together.”

→ She left the emotionally abusive relationship a few months later, and her kids rallied to her defense. She’s given them an example of tremendous strength.

“I can’t take a two week vacation! Work would derail without me and I’d spend the next month catching up.”

→ He finally learned to delegate and empower his team, and took a two week vacation without checking email. Nothing burned to the ground.

What story are you telling yourself even though you sense they might not be true?
